How to Convert Your International Driving Licence In Australia

Convert Overseas Licence to Victorian (VIC) Licence

Wondering how to convert your international driving licence in Victoria? Let us guide you through the process.

Driving in Victoria with an international licence depends on your visa type. If you're on a temporary visa, you’re not required to obtain a Victorian driver’s licence. You can drive for the duration of your stay as long as you have the necessary documentation.

Your international Licence must either be in English or accompanied by an official English translation or an international driving permit (IDP).

For those holding a permanent visa (as defined under the Migration Act 1958), you may drive with your existing Licence and the appropriate documentation for:

  • 6 months from the date you first entered Australia (if your permanent visa was granted before you arrived), or
  • 6 months from the date your permanent visa was issued (if it was granted while you were in Australia).

After this period, you’ll need to transfer your international Licence to a Victorian driver’s Licence to continue driving legally.
